POTSDAM - A young Potsdam Central varsity girls volleyball team gave coach Julia Pahler some NAC season-opening peace of mind on Thursday.
We lost a lot of seniors and our numbers are pretty low so I was a little concerned with how we would do before our match. We still have a lot to work on but Im definitely very happy with the way things turned out for us today, said Pahler after the Lady Sandstoners turned back West Division rival OFA in four sets.
The senior duo of Victoria Mondragon and Sarah Vivlamore anchored the winning effort as Potsdam took the opening set 25-20 but dropped the second 27-25 before regrouping to claim the next two 25-15, 25-19. Mondragon finished with 14 service points, three aces and two kills while Vivlamore tallied 12 points, three aces, three blocks, two kills, 35 sets and 4 assists. Veteran Katie Burke turned in a solid all-around effort at the net while newcomers Miranda Mangual, Rory Sixberry and Elna Daby stepped up to make key contributions throughout the match.
For OFA, Sky Hoover (5 aces, 4 kills) and Paige Perry served up 10 points apiece while Emma Hart generated six points, four aces and four kills.
The Lady Sandstoners return to action on Monday with a match at Madrid-Waddington.
In other NAC season openers on Thursday, Madrid-Waddington outlasted Canton in five sets and Edwards-Knox swept past Gouverneur.
M-W 3, Canton 2: In Madrid, the Lady Yellowjackets won the opening set 25-23 but fell in the next two by scores of 25-23, 25-19 before rallying to claim the fourth and fifth sets 25-23, 25-16.
Its nice to start the season with a win, noted coach Troy Creurer. It was a pretty solid across-the-board effort for us tonight.
Junior Dia Richards led the way for M-W with 28 points and four aces. Senior Brittanni Dawley produced 16 points and five aces while junior Jenny King worked the net for six kills and five blocks.
