POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central varsity girls soccer team earned a chance to extend a long-standing reign as champion of the John Jeffers Memorial Soccer Tournament after downing Madrid-Waddington 2-0 on its home turf in the opening round on Thursday.
Senior Abby Gruneisen finished off a play set up by junior Kelsey Green 15 minutes into the game and the Lady Sandstoners made it hold up as the game-winner. Sophomore Kalie Grant added the insurance goal 10 minutes later assisted by Gruneisen and junior netminder Bre Sapp handled the six shots she faced for the shutout.
Freshman Marlaina Bush (8 saves) and eighth-grader Ariana Ramsey (4 saves) shared crease duties for the Lady Yellowjackets.
Potsdam will now get set to take on Colton-Pierrepont in the tournament final slated for Saturday at 9 a.m. at the turf field. C-P advance via a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence Central in the other first round matchup.
M-W and SLC will square off against each other in the consolation on the former varsity soccer field starting at 9 a.m. as well. The consolation game will also serve as the NAC East Division debut for both clubs.
C-P 1, SLC 0: In the first game of the tournament, freshman Madison Gregg converted on a lead pass from senior Andrea Aldous just five minutes into the game and the Lady Colts made it stand as the game-winner.
Kathryn Miller made four saves backstopping the shutout behind the solid defensive efforts of fullbacks Abbie Johnson, Hannah Hogle, Alexis Van Brocklin and Kendra Gilbert.
Haleigh Agans turned aside eight shots working the SLC crease.
A trio of NAC West Division boys soccer games played on Thursday saw Harrisville double Morristown 4-2, Edwards-Knox clip Hammond 2-1 and Heuvelton beat Clifton-Fine 4-1.
