AKWESASNE – Mr. Arthur “Art” J. Bova, 81, of 2151 River Road, Sugarbush Island, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday morning, September 4, 2013 at the home of his son in Central Square.

Art was born January 11, 1932 on Cornwall Island, the son of the late James and Julia Boots Bova. He attended schools on Cornwall Island. On August 21, 1954, he married Margaret J. “Peg” Ransom at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating. Peg predeceased him on April 21, 2002.

Art and Peg lived in Mattydale for 31 years before moving to Central Square where they lived for 6 years before moving back to the Reservation in 1993. Art was an ironworker with Local #60 in Syracuse retiring after 40 years. He was an active communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Kateri Circle. While living in Syracuse, he was an active member of St. Lucy’s Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed watching it on television. In addition, he enjoyed bowling, gardening, and spending time at home with his family.

Art is survived by his four children, Karen and Leonard Foster of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Pam and Michael Scheemaker of Central Square; Dan and Gretchen Bova of Central Square; and Lorri Bova of Akwesasne; his grandchildren, Julia B. Foster, Joshua Talone, Derek, Valerie, Stephanie, and Dana Bova; and his great grandchildren, Michael and Veronica Talone. He is also survived by his sister, Hilda and Michael Smoke of Akwesasne; his brother, Wilfred W. Bova of Akwesasne; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Tootsie.

Art was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Chaussi on April 10, 2009.

Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers beginning Friday 4:00PM until 2:00 PM Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Sunday 3:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jack L. Downs, celebrating. Burial will follow in Kateri Cemetery, Akwesasne.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Regis Catholic Church or St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, 438 Gifford Street, Syracuse, NY 13601.
