COPENHAGEN — Firefighters from several departments extinguished a barn fire in the town of Pinckney on Thursday afternoon.

“Everything went pretty good,” said Lewis County Fire Coordinator James M. Martin.

Copenhagen firefighters were called to the Robert Lyndaker farm at 1647 County Route 194 about 2 p.m. and requested mutual aid from the Lowville, Castorland, Champion, West Carthage and Rodman fire departments.

The fire started because of hay combustion on the floor of the hay mow, but firefighters managed to contain the blaze before it spread throughout the dry hay, Mr. Martin said.

Volunteers and farmworkers spent most of the afternoon dousing hot spots and removing smoldering hay from the barn, and a trackhoe from the town of Pinckney was brought in to assist the effort, he said.

“It just took some time,” Mr. Martin said.

A portion of the mow floor had to be removed to gain access to the blaze, and cows were removed from the lower portion of the barn as a precaution, he said.

Lewis County Search and Rescue, National Grid and the Copenhagen Fire Department Auxiliary assisted at the scene.
