St. Lawrence tops Rochester in soccer

CANTON — Morgan Smith scored off a pass from Andrew Bednarsky in the 72nd minute to lead the St. Lawrence University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rochester (2-1 overall) in a nonconference game Friday.

Aaron Costello made three saves for the shutout for the Saints (2-1).

SUNY GENESEO 3, CLARKSON 0

Rich Bellusci scored twice to help SUNY Geneseo knock off the Golden Knights (1-2) in a nonconference game in Potsdam.

Stanley Egbuchulam also scored for SUNY Geneseo (1-1-1), and Dan Maddock made three saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

ST. LAWRENCE 2, SUNY PLATTSBURGH 1

Erika Gobielle and Julia Friesen scored goals in the second half to help the Saints (3-0) knock off the Cardinals in a nonconference game in Plattsburgh.

Friesen’s game-winner came in the 59th minute for the Saints. Emily LaLone scored for SUNY Plattsburgh (1-2).

VOLLEYBALL

CLARKSON, SUNY POTSDAM SWEEP

Victoria Kirkemo produced 13 kills as Clarkson swept Southern Vermont 25-13, 25-9, 25-4 in its first match of the Victory Promotions Tournament at SUNY Potsdam. The Golden Knights (4-2) added a 20-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-13 win over Queens in a match that did not count in Clarkson’s official record.

The Bears opened with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-7 sweep of Norwich. Sarah Anderson provided 11 kills for SUNY Potsdam (4-3) and Jenna Blujus added 15 assists.

SUNY Potsdam finished the opening day with a 20-25, 25-14, 25-18, 24-26, 15-9 win over SUNY Plattsburgh.

SAINTS, KANGAROOS SPLIT

SLU split a pair of matches in its home gym on the first day of the Victory Promotions Tournament.

The Saints (3-3) swept village rival SUNY Canton 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 as Amanda Brooks tallied 10 kills and Jenna Street produced 12 assists. Kelsy Cornish had 11 kills for SUNY Canton (4-1).

SLU dropped its second match to St. Michael’s, falling 25-19, 25-2, 20-25, 23-25, 16-14. Lexi Brown recorded 17 kills for the Saints in the match and Street had 28 assists. SUNY Canton had better luck against St. Michael’s, winning three games to one.
