POTSDAM - Village police have charged the former secretary of a Potsdam sorority with stealing more than $13,000 from the organization’s coffers during a two-year period.

Potsdam Village Police charged Clarissa K. Evenden, 22, of Ithaca with a felony count of third-degree grand larceny Friday morning following a lengthy investigation into the theft of monies from Alpha Delta Kappa, 46 Elm St.. She was arraigned by Potsdam Village Justice Nicholas Pignone and released on her own recognizance.

The Potsdam Police Department said they received assistance from the Ithaca Police Department in the investigation of the reported theft of over $13,000 from Alpha Delta Kappa by its former treasurer.

Police said Evenden cashed numerous checks made out to her using the sorority bank account and also made several online transactions. The transactions occurred between late 2011 and early 2013.

Her Facebook page lists her as a former Clarkson University student and says she started work in August at a financial investment firm in Ithaca.

Alpha Delta Kappa President Jessica M. Shea, in a statement she provided police, said it had come to the attention of sorority members that the organization’s former treasurer had made unauthorized online transactions with the sorority debit card and checks written on the sorority’s account to herself and others for $4,661.26 between Sept. 21, 2011 and Oct. 4, 2012. “Evenden also cashed $8,350 worth of checks made out to ‘cash,’ which were cashed at a Community Bank branch in Ithaca between Nov. 20, 2012 and Feb. 5, 2013. The total amount of the unauthorized transactions is $13,011.26. Evenden had no right to use the sorority’s accounts and funds for personal use,” Ms. Shea noted in her statement.
