ASSAULT - MASSENA - Village police charged Christopher J. McGregor, 32, of 11 Tracy St., Massena, with a felony count of second-degree assault at 8:05 p.m. Monday following an investigation into an incident that took place at 11:34 p.m. Aug. 30 behind the Delmar Tavern in the parking lot off Andrews Street.
McGregor was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson with bail set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond.
McGregor reportedly punched Ronald Freeman several times in the face. Mr. Freeman told police he was treated at Canton-Potsdam Hospital the next morning and a CAT scan revealed he had two breaks, one on each side of his jaw.
Mr. Freeman told police he went to the parking lot to smoke a cigarette and saw Robert Lytle had brought his own beer to the bar rather than purchasing it from the Delmar. He said he told Lytle it seemed like a good idea and offered to buy a beer. He told police Lytle became enraged and started screaming at him.
He said he started to walk away but encountered Lytle and two other men. For no reason, Chris walked up to me and punched me in the face at least a couple of times, Mr. Freeman noted in his statement to village police.
Other people intervened to break up the altercation, and Mr. Freeman said he immediately left the area with his girlfriend, Amanda Cope. She told police she took Mr. Freeman to the hospital the next morning to get treatment for his injuries.
