SUNY Canton spikers handle Plattsburgh for 4th straight win


PLATTSBURGH - The SUNY Canton women’s volleyball team continued their impressive play rattling off their fourth straight win defeating host Plattsburgh State, 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22), Tuesday evening on the road.

The win improves the Kangaroos to 7-1, while the loss drops the Cardinals to 1-7.Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) and Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) each recorded eight digs apiece while flooring 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) set the tone offensively spreading the floor to the tune of 38 assists while showing her dominance defensively tallying the second most digs of any match in her career with 21.

Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) was an enforcer on the defensive side of the floor finishing with match-highs of 29 digs and four service aces, while Emily Thomas (Horseheads, NY) provided a spark contributing nine digs and three aces.

SUNY Canton got off to a strong start in the opening set as they floored 13 kills, the most of any Roo set in the match, leading to the 25-19 win. Meanwhile, the visitors’ strong play all over the floor forced the Cardinals into more errors (8) than kills (7). Plattsburgh responded in the second frame tallying 15 kills of their own to knot the match at 1-1, edging the Roos 25-22.

The third set was a battle but SUNY Canton’s precision on the attack proved to be crucial as they put down 12 kills compared two just two errors to prevail 25-21. The Roos showed their mental toughness in the fourth frame and despite recording less kills than the Cardinals were able to finish off the four-set victory, 25-22.

The women’s volleyball team will return to the Roos House on Saturday when they host the SUNY Canton Tri-Match when they welcome Paul Smith’s College and Johnson State College to town. The Roos square off with Paul Smith’s at 11a.m. before a 2p.m. tilt with Johnson State.
