Potsdam, Salmon River girls soccer teams win NAC Central debuts

The Potsdam Central and Salmon River varsity girls soccer teams posted constrasting wins while Massena fell short to Canton in overtime in their NAC Central Division openers on Tuesday.

Potsdam 9, Norwood-Norfolk 0: At the Potsdam turf field, the Lady Sandstoners rolled to a 7-0 halftime lead en route to notching the convincing win over the Lady Flyers..

Kalie Grant opened the scoring in the seventh minute off an assist from Abby Gruneisen and that stood as the game-winner. Grant wound up with a goal and three assists while Annette Rishe produced a hattrick and Savarah Aidun struck for a pair of goals. Ally Miller and Haley Clark each tallied a goal and assist and Jenny Tardelli accounted for the other goal.

Bre Sapp fielded the only shot she faced in backstopping the shutout while Meg Plumb posted 16 saves for N-N (0-3-0, 0-2-0).

Salmon River 1, OFA 0: In Ogdensburg, Taylor Francis converted the best scoring chance of the day in lifting the visiting Lady Shamrocks past OFA at the Kennedy School field.

Perched on the far post, Francis directed a perfectly struck corner kick by Kelly Mitchell into the net 10 minutes into the second half.

The Lady Devils enjoyed their best sustained offensive pressure in the final eight minutes of the contest where SR goaltender Wraven Sunday (5 saves) handled a dangerous direct kick by Alicia Shaver and a Salmon Rivcer defender cleared a well-placed corner kick by Taylor Smith.

Salmon River JV’s 2, OFA JV’s 0: Salmon River’s Johnson and DeJung scored in the final nine minutes of the game as the Shamrocks denied the Devils who gained a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Canton 3, Massena 2 (2OT): In a Central Division opener played at Mike Nicholas Field, the Lady Raiders battled back from a late goal to pull even and force overtime before falling to the Lady Bears.

Natalie Hurlbut opened the scoring for Massena after finishing off a play set up by Mia Jermano 11 minutes into the game but Kalie Frank tied the game 20 minutes later assisted by Molly Curtis.

Frank gave Canton its first lead when she broke through for an unassisted goal with 9:43 left in regulation but Hurlbut countered just three minutes later off another assist from Jermano.

After a scoreless first 10-minute overtime session, Frank delivered a corner kick to the front of the goal and the ball was played back to Tori Daley, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net from just outside the penalty area with 7:14 left in the second OT.

Bailie Young handled 11 shots for the Lady Raiders (0-2-0, 0-1-0) while Katie Clemmer posted nine stops for Canton, which was making its season debut.

Franklin Academy 6, Gouverneur 1: In the other Central Division game of the day played in Malone, the Lady Huskies scored three goals in a seven-minute span midway through the first half to set the tone for their convincing win.

Gabrielle Collins and Morgan Fountain both scored twice and drew an assist to anchor the winning offense. Maggie Albu and Katie Lamica struck for the other goals while Jayme Lavoie and Meghan O’Connor made three saves each sharing crease duties in the win.

Bell Hall converted off an assist from Danielle McCormick to account for the Gouverneur goal in the 31st minute while Taylor Andrews handled 11 shots in the losing cause.

WEST DIVISION

In West Division girls soccer matchups on Tuesday, Hermon-DeKalb blanked Morristown 2-0 and Hammond stopped Clifton-Fine 5-0 while the lone West Division boys game saw Morristown rout Hermon-DeKalb 7-0.
