Paterson Street overhaul to begin in spring 2014

The federally-funded $7.5 million overhaul of the entire length of Paterson Street will begin in spring 2014.

Michael R. Flick, assistant to the regional director/public information officer for the state Department of Transportation, anticipates things will get going on the project pre-construction in December.

“The proposed project is expected to be bid in December, pending finalization of right-of-way/real property acquisitions,” he said.

The city has $35,000 to negotiate right-of-way acquisition fees of no less than $250 per property owner based on assessment.

An estimated 15 property owners are negotiating with the city through a consultant.

The two-year project covers 1.1-miles of Paterson Street from the port of Ogdensburg south to its 1100 block near Route 37.

The scope of the work to be done includes:

—Restoring the street surface for heavy truck traffic to and from the port, and widening the existing 30-foot roadway to include two 12-foot wide travel lanes and two seven-foot-wide parking lanes.

—Separation of the street’s storm sewer system from the existing combined storm/sanitary system.

—A changing lane at Paterson and Ford streets.

—New sidewalks and curbing.

—Utility poles removal and replacement.

—Trees on both sides of the street will be removed and replaced with smaller trees. Sidewalks will still be five feet wide, but the green strip between the curb and the sidewalk will be reduced from about to six to eight feet, to four feet.
