Taylor Francis converted the best scoring chance of the day as Salmon River downed OFA 1-0 in NAC Central Girls Soccer action at the Kennedy School field.
Perched on the far post, Francis re-directed a perfectly struck corner kick by Kelly Mitchell into the net 10 minutes into the second half to give the 1-1 Shamrocks a win in their division opener.
OFA keeper Jordan Marcellus stopped 13 shots in the contest playing a key role in the Devils ability to check all SR scoring attempts from scrimmage.
The Lady Devils (1-1 NAC, 1-2 overall) threatened twice at the onset of the game but enjoyed their best sustained offensive pressure in the final eight minutes of the contest. SR goaltender Wraven Sunday (5 saves) handled a dangerous direct shot by Alicia Shaver off a direct kick by Courtney Sherwin and a Shamrock defender cleared a well-placed corner kick by Taylor Smith.
We started to put some things together offensively late in the game but Salmon River controlled the play for a lot of the game, said OFA Coach Allen Rishe Jr.
Riley Luckie did a nice job distributing passes from the midfield, Courtney Sherwin had another strong defensive game, I moved Alicia Sharpe to stopper and she played well there and MacKenzee Holland made some good runs early in the game on the wing. But overall we have work on our passes to the wings. A lot of them were rolling out of bounds today.
SR JVs 2 - OFA JVs 0: Salmon Rivers Johnson and DeJung scored in the final nine minutes of the game as the Shamrocks denied the Devils who gained a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.
OFA keeper Alicia Garcia played well backed by strong defensive efforts from Jill Lincoln, Jadienne Averill, Abby Marshall and Erin Tooley according to coach Renee Tebo. Ashley Barr, Natalie McCormick and Ali Moore were cited for leading the midfield play and the offensive line of Sarah Barr, Lexi Kennedy and Courtney Brabant had many opportunities but were unable to convert.
Canton 3, Massena 2 (2OT): Natalie Hurlbut opened the scoring for Massena after finishing off a play set up by Mia Jermano 11 minutes into the game but Kalie Frank tied the game 20 minutes later assisted by Molly Curtis.
Frank gave Canton its first lead when she broke through for an unassisted goal with 9:43 left in regulation but Hurlbut countered just three minutes later off another assist from Jermano.
Frank delivered a corner kick to the front of the goal and the ball was played back to Tori Daley, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net from just outside the penalty area with 7:14 left in the second OT to give Canton a win in its opening game.
Bailie Young handled 11 shots for the Lady Raiders (0-2-0, 0-1-0) while Katie Clemmer posted nine stops for Canton (0-1, 0-1).
