POTSDAM - Members of Canton-Potsdam Hospitals Physical Rehabilitation staff received running analysis training and are now offering an analysis program to the community at their Potsdam office on Lawrence Avenue. Training took place in Framingham, Mass., where some 20 professionals across the United States received continuing education.
The training focused on treatment of injuries that occur through continuous running with compromised form. Attendees gained an appreciation for using videography to analyze running form, which allows them to share findings with the patient and more thoroughly explain suggestions for improvement. After an analysis with a patient, staff will create an exercise regime thats specific to strengthening his/her areas of weaknesses. The cost associated with the analysis, findings, and creation of a home exercise plan is $75.00 for two visits. If pain is associated with running, the individual may benefit from a complete therapy evaluation in addition to the video analysis. The complete evaluation is covered by most medical insurances with a doctors referral.
Nearly 50 percent of runners become injured each year, said Tracy French, physical therapist. This program identifies the mechanical flaws in the runners form that are associated with a high risk of injury and incorporates training and modification of running technique to improve running performance and efficiency, said French. Strength training alone is not effective at improving running form. All runners can benefit from video analysis, from the beginner to the competitive runner, added French.
Muscle imbalances can alter the bodys movement patterns without the patient recognizing any problem, said Laurie Matthews, physical therapy assistant.
Typically, a runner does not receive physical therapy until there is a painful condition present. We are hoping to expand our treatment from injury recovery to injury prevention, French pointed out.
