Remaining ballots could tip primary races

CANTON — Absentee and affidavit ballots, which will be counted next week, could change results in several close St. Lawrence County Republican primary races.

“The election’s not over,” county Republican Election Commissioner Thomas A. Nichols said.

The Board of Elections will start its recanvass of results today to check the accuracy of numbers from voting machines. It will then determine whether affidavit ballots — sometimes cast when a voter has moved or believes they are registered to a certain party despite records at the polls to the contrary — are valid.

Absentees received within seven days of Election Day also will be counted.

In the case of Fowler, incumbent Town Council member Ricky W. Newvine was the top vote-getter for two available seats with 67 votes. There was a tie for second place between Lynn E. Bishop and Dustin A. Fayette, who each received 48 votes. Randy L. Durham, another incumbent, had 34 votes.

The Board of Elections sent out 14 absentee ballots for Fowler residents and 10 have been returned, Mr. Nichols said.

In Edwards, three people ran for the Republican nomination for two seats on the council. Stephen J. Taylor had 17 votes, Dianne L. Hurley had 16 and Rita F. Thornton had 12.

The Board of Elections sent out eight absentees and has received four so far, Mr. Nichols said.

Russell also had a close race for two seats on the council.

Christopher Kelley had the most votes, with 33. Second place went to Edward Whiteford, with 28 votes. Sandy Burnham received 25 votes and Michael G. White had 23.

The Board of Elections mailed out six absentee ballots for Russell and has so far received two, Mr. Nichols said.
