Congress only cares about starting wars

There has been another horrible event in the Middle East. The use of nerve gas against the citizens of Syria resulted in at least 1,000 deaths.

The political upheaval in that part of the world has been occurring for centuries with no sign that it will ever change. Yet once again, the United States government feels the need to respond. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is back early from its most recent break, debating how we should be involved in this latest crisis.

While no one would dispute the despicable nature of the use of nerve gas against innocent civilians, I do wonder why the loss of life in Syria warrants the moral outrage of a Congress that has done nothing to alleviate issues facing our own people.

While middle class Americans slide into poverty, roads and bridges disintegrate, first-responders lose their jobs for lack of funding, schools fall apart and libraries reduce their hours, the elected officials in Washington have failed to act.

I know that feeding hungry children in America is not as sexy as a missile strike. In fact, unless it’s an attempt to keep women barefoot, pregnant and back in the kitchen, suppressing the vote of those who disagree with them or answering the call of big oil, our elected officials just don’t seem to care.

But just mention al-Qaida or the Muslim Brotherhood and those tired old men in Washington get a gleam in their eye and an adrenal rush that animates and energizes them. It’s the “war on terror” they will tell you. It’s “national security.”

I wonder how terrified a mother feels when having lost her home to foreclosure she finds herself trying to care for children while living in a homeless shelter. What does national security mean to anyone who cannot feel safe and secure in their own homes because there are too few police or firemen to protect them?

Where is the outrage on their behalf? And why is it that the only thing this Congress is willing to get excited about is war?
