Franklin County leaders fight to save Chateaugay prison

CHATEAUGAY — The fight continues to save the Chateaugay Correctional Facility, as representatives from the Chateaugay town and village boards, a Chateaugay business owner, the Franklin County Legislature and current and retired employees spread the word to try to stop the closure.

Multiple letters of opposition to the state’s plan from employees of the facility, business owners and residents were expected to be presented at a meeting held Thursday. However, Brenda Brue, a nurse at the prison for the past 12 years, said she received only three letters – all from residents.

“A lot of people in the village don’t think it’s going to affect them,” said Mayor Jason LaPlante. “It’s going to affect everybody.”

Legislature Chairman Billy Jones, D-Chateaugay, and Councilman Greg Janisewski sent out 30 letters to businesses asking them to write letters opposing the closure. More letters will be sent out asking for support, Mr. Jones said.

Those at the meeting discussed holding a rally Oct. 5 at Chateaugay Recreational Park, to which Mr. Jones suggested inviting representatives from other prisons. Prison supporters also plan to create a packet illustrating the need for the prison and how its closing would affect the surrounding community.

The facility’s closing date has been set for July 26, according to a news release from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
