College roundup: Golden Knights nip Soaring Eagles in women’s soccer

POTSDAM — Cailey Nieto scored on a pass from Taylor Abraham in the fourth minute to lead the Clarkson University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Elmira College in a nonconference game Friday.

Clarkson (3-2 overall) held Elmira to only seven shots, and Kim Kenline made two saves to shut out the Soaring Eagles (2-2).

ST. LAWRENCE 1, NAZARETH 1 (OT)

Michaela Soules scored an unassisted goal in the 74th minute to give Nazareth (2-1-2) a tie with the Saints in a nonconference game in Canton.

Mimi Coppinger scored for SLU (4-0-1) in the 37th minute off a pass from Taylor Goldsborough.

MEN’S SOCCER

Skidmore 1, suny potsdam 0

Adebare Oyeniyi scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute to lead Skidmore College past the Bears (4-2) in a nonconference game in Saratoga Springs.

Nick Davies made four saves for Skidmore (3-2).

VOLLEYBALL

BEARS SPLIT IN ROCHESTER

Sarah Anderson produced 13 kills to lead SUNY Potsdam (5-6) to a 25-18, 22-25, 17-25, 25-7, 15-8 win over Medaille in the Bears’ second match at the Rochester Invitational.

SUNY Potsdam dropped its opener to host Rochester, 25-20, 18-25, 27-25, 25-16.

SAINTS START 1-1 in OSWEGO

St. Lawrence University (5-4) opened the SUNY Oswego Invitational with a 25-23, 25-25, 25-19 loss to SUNYIT.

The Saints answered in their second match, defeating Utica College 26-24, 25-18, 24-26, 25-10.

CLARKSON WINS IN CALIFORNIA

The Golden Knights (7-2) started off the La Verne (Calif.) Tournament with a 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13 win over the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Clarkson faced the host school, which is in the Los Angeles area, in the second match. The match started too late to make this edition.

MEN’S GOLF

MEADE WINS TOURNAMENT

SUNY Canton’s Zach Meade, a Tupper Lake native, finished first overall at the SUNY Cobleskill Invitational with a 1-over par 71.

Meade helped SUNY Canton to a third-place showing with 314 strokes. SUNY Cobleskill won the event.

SUNY Canton’s Nate Christy finished tied for fifth with a 78.
