Mr. John Howard Short, age 82 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Friday, September 13, 2013 at his home in the town of Potsdam, NY from pancreatic cancer. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 18th from 4-7 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday the 19th at 10 am with Msgr. Robert Aucoin celebrant. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam, NY. Online condolences can be sent @www.garnerfh.com.

Born November 1, 1930 in Rochester, NY to the late John A. and Gertrude Wright Short. He married Barbara Badger on August 20, 1955.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Anne Elizabeth Smith, widow of Paris Smith; William John (Pamela) Short; James / Jake (Lee Ann) Short.

He is also survived by one brother, Thomas Short of Frenchtown, NJ and one sister Nancy Fulmer of Redlands, CA. There are six grandchildren: Ashton Short, Hannah Short Ellis, Samantha Short, Zachary Short, Lucas Short and Leah Short.

After graduating from the University of Rochester with a degree in Finance, he was employed as a Commercial Loan Analyst with the Marine Midland Bank in Rochester. He subsequently joined the Haloid Corporation as it was changing to the Xerox Corporation, where he served as a Financial Analyst.

He later returned to Marine Midland as a member of the original team to convert the bank from a manual to a computerized system.

In 1966 John joined the team at SUNY Potsdam in the establishment of an administrative computer system. When Director Alan Stillman established a degree program that combined the liberal arts with computer technical skills, John was drafted to teach the computer business application.

John also served two non-consecutive terms as Chairman of the SUNY Computing Officers Association.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: the West Stockholm Volunteer Fire Department; The Cancer Center at Canton Potsdam Hospital or St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam, NY.
