Group seeks aid in upgrading Carthage skate park

CARTHAGE — Village President G. Wayne McIlroy reported to the Board of Trustees Monday night that he had visited the village skate park and felt most of the needed repairs could be done in house.

Seeking aid for Ryder’s Edge skate park, three young men addressed the village board Aug. 19. “Due to the absence of a skate park director and lack of community involvement, various problematic conditions have arisen,” Jonathan McIlroy read from a prepared statement.

The representatives of the Carthage Skate Park community listed seven areas that need attention at the skateboard arena at the Carthage Park off Route 3 on the outskirts of the village. The group, which also included Christopher Ayers and Tim Cook, said trees had fallen, damaging the fence surrounding the skate park, equipment and the foundation have deteriorated and there were unsanitary conditions. The group attributed some of the problems to lack of supervision and enforcement of the skate park’s rules.

“There’s a lot we can take care of ourselves,” Mr. McIlroy told the board during the September meeting. He said the park equipment probably would need sandblasting before painting, with the paint and sealer provided through former police Chief Reevie A. Rockhill. The cost for the painting preparation could be set aside in the new budget and tree removal and fence repair could be taken care of by the village Department of Public Works, Mr. McIlroy said.

The skate park was established in 2001. Money for the equipment came from fundraisers spearheaded by a committee of teenagers and parents including Amy McEathron, Stephanie Clemons, Mike Prievo and Casey Passage.

Originally the skate park was located at the bottom of the hill behind the recreation building.
