Record number of companies coming to Clarkson career fair

POTSDAM — Clarkson University job-seekers will have a better chance than ever of making a connection Thursday as a record number of employers attend the college’s annual fall career fair.

They come mostly from the Northeast, but some travel all the way from California, 155 companies with positions to fill.

The number of companies in attendance has increased steadily for the last few years, boding well for the recovery of the job market, Clarkson Career Center Director Jeffrey D. Taylor said.

“This year we’ve exceeded even our own expectations,” he said.

The fair is open only to Clarkson students and alumni. Every employer, from Walmart to Lockheed Martin, will have applications available and a need for new recruits.

Career fairs provide a rare chance for job-seekers to get face-to-face with employers before their application has been reviewed, according to Mr. Taylor. Some students will seek internships, while others will be in the market for full-time jobs.

“In today’s job market, it’s often hard to reach employers prior to an interview because of online job applications,” he said.

It’s too early for detailed predictions about next year’s job market, but anecdotal evidence suggests things are looking good for students, Mr. Taylor said.

“What we’re hearing from employers is that companies are having a greater need for succession planning,” he said.

The high employer attendance is an early indicator of good prospects for graduates.

“It’s a very positive trend to see at this point during the year,” Mr. Taylor said.

Clarkson also will host virtual career fairs, site visits with employers, career panels and guest speakers throughout the year to provide more ways for students to get in touch with their potential future bosses.
