Massena spikers outlast Salmon River for third straight NAC win

MASSENA - After opening the NAC season with back-to-back losses, the Massena Central varsity girls volleyball team rallied to earn its third straight win on Wednesday, turning back Salmon River in five sets.

“We needed this win,” said first-year varsity coach Cassie Hayes. “The girls worked hard right to the end.”

The Lady Raiders trailed 8-2 to start the first set but battled back to gain a 27-25 decision before the Lady Shamrocks regrouped to dominate the next two sets 25-14, 25-17. Massena then evened the match by taking the fourth set 25-19 before rallying for a 27-25 win in the decisive fifth.

Junior Krista Loran notched a team-high 18 points off her serve and 11 kills to lead the way for the Lady Raiders. Sophomore Jacalyn Lamica worked the court for 24 sets, 16 points and nine assists. Classmate Madeline Thibault returned to the lineup from an ankle injury and served up 14 points, including three aces, while senior Samanntha Villnave generated nine points and six kills.

For the Lady Shamrocks, who slipped to 2-3 on the year, Raven Oakes fashioned 14 service points and 16 kills. Brittany Brooks (4 assists) and Taylin David contributed 12 points apiece followed by Wakie Mitchell with 11 while Raylynn Sunday produced 10 points and 15 assists.

The Lady Raiders opened the week with a sweep on the road over Tupper Lake on Monday. In that match, Sophomore Cashlynn Jaggers had a team-leading 13 services points followed by Villnave with 10. Loran logged nine points along with sophomore Nina Rourke while Lamica recorded 29 sets.

The Lady Raiders are slated to play on the road against Edwards-Knox on Friday while Salmon River plays host to Gouverneur on Monday.

In the other NAC matches on Wednesday, Chateaugay swept past Franklin Academy 25-11, 25-15, 25-18 and Brushton-Moira hosted Tupper Lake.

In the lone NAC varsity boys soccer matchup on Wednesday, Chateaugay logged a 5-1 East Division win over St. Regis Falls while the only varsity girls soccer action saw Heuvelton overpower West Division rival Edwards-Knox 7-0.

Chad Stalter scored three first half goals then opened the scoring in the second to lead the Bulldogs (3-0) past the Saints. Reid Laplante tallied a goal and assist

Louis Goodrow converted on an assist from Tyler Fraser with 6:27 left in regulation to account for the lone SRF (1-2-1) goal.

Josh Trombley handled four shots backstopping the win while Mike Smith made six saves in the losing effort.

In the Heuvelton girls win over E-K, Hannah Thornhill netted three goals and Alex Weidner struck for two others. Maddie St. Pierre notched a goal and two assists while Olivia St. Pierre drew a pair of helpers.
