Mary Ellen Colby


MASSENA – Ms. Mary Ellen Colby, 62, of 140 Maple Street, unexpectedly passed away, Wednesday morning, September 18, 2013 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been admitted the previous day.

Mary Ellen was born July 27, 1951 in Massena, the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Losey Colby. She first attended St. Patrick’s Grade School in Brasher before moving to Massena where she graduated from Holy Family High School in 1969. She then went to Trinity College in Burlington where she graduated with her teaching degree.

Mary Ellen was a teacher at St. Lawrence Central School in Brasher, teaching third grade for most of her teaching years. She retired from teaching in 2006. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was active the NYS Retired Teachers Association. Mary Ellen was also former member of the Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and volunteer at the Massena Free Clinic. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and spending time with her family and many friends.

She is survived by her brothers, David and Fae Colby of Massena and William and Joan Colby of West Sacramento, CA; her nieces, Anastasia and Todd Blanchard and their children, Jade, Dannel, Jessica, and Brittney; and Katie, Sarah, and Mary Anne; and many friends.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Sunday 1-4 PM. Friends may meet at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Monday 10:00 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of her life with Rev. Scott D. Fobare, celebrating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
