LOWVILLE – Donald J. Brown, 70, of Ridge Road, Lowville, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Samaritan Medical Center.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2013 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville, with Rev. Christopher Carrara, Pastor, officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen. Calling hours are from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jeffrey Brown Scholarship Fund, c/o Lowville Academy and Central School, 7668 N. State St., Lowville, NY 13367.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirlean; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Brian Swartz of Castorland; three grandchildren, Katelyn, Madyson and Tucker Swartz; five brothers, three sisters, and their spouses, Charles and Betty Lou Brown of Castorland; Edward and Connie Brown of Harrisville; Stephen and Paula Brown of West Haven, CT; Eleanor and Thomas Prouty of Waterville, NY; Bonnie and Tony Aucter of Croghan; Gerald and Renee Brown of Croghan; Rosella and Robert Kloster of Croghan; Michael and Yvonne Brown of Watertown; an aunt, Jane Brown of Lowville; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Donald Brown, who died February 11, 1995; and a nephew, Keith Charles Brown, who died August 22, 1993; a niece, Denise Combs, who died November 23, 1989; two grand nephews, Justin Michael and Joseph Loren Zehr who died December 27, 1983; and a sister, Elizabeth Ann, who died June 4, 1940.

Donald was born on September 3, 1943 in Rome, NY, a son of the late William C. Brown, Jr. and the late Mildred E. Bush Brown Miller. He graduated from Father Leo Memorial School in Croghan, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Brown was discharged in August 1969, and served in the Reserves in Watertown and Utica for a total of 27 years. On July 20, 1968, he married Shirlean Mae Herzig at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan with Father Leo Brown OFM offciating. Mr. Brown worked as a Supply Technician at the Equipment Concentration Site on Fort Drum for more than 34 years, retiring in 2003.

Mr. Brown was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville, and was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2175, Croghan. He was a member of the New Bremen Fire Department, and was a member of Beaver River Memorial Post #1663, Croghan American Legion Firing Squad. He was a member of the Lowville American Legion Bike Club.

Donald enjoyed riding motorcycle, and loved helping his daughter Kim at the New Bremen General Store. He enjoyed playing euchre with Russ Houppert. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
