Massena, Salmon River boys soccer teams net NAC Central shutout wins


MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity boys soccer team bounced back from a tough loss on the road to open the week by turning back Potsdam Central 3-0 in a NAC Central Division matchup at Mike Nicholas Field on Thursday.

Jason Hammill finished off a play set up by Dylan Stone with 9:42 left in the first half ro the only goal the Raiders would need. Forrest Brockway made it 2-0 assisted by Tyler Young with 9:15 left in regulation before Evan Kassian sealed the win by converting off an assist from Stone less than six minutes later.

Cameron Marsh handled the 10 shots he faced backstopping the win while the duo of Ashler Herrick (5 saves) and Jack Burns (5 saves) split goaltending duties for the Sandstoners.

Now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the division, Massena is slated to host a non-league matchup against Northwood Prep on Monday starting at 5 p.m. while Potsdam (3-3, 1-3) returns to action on Tuesday at home against Massena in what will be played as a non-league game.

In the other Central Division action on Thursday, Salmon River blanked Gouverneur 3-0 and Canton did likewise to Franklin Academy.

Salmon River 3, Gouverneur 0: In Gouverneur, the Shamrocks scored three times midway through the second half to come away with the their first league win of the season.

Nick Hynes snapped a scoreless tie when he converted from Antoine Domino in the 22nd minute. Skkylar Thomas tallied the first insurance goal four minutes later assisted by Josh Hynes, who drew the lone assist on a goal by Domino six minutes later that sealed the win.

Zach Smith posted two saves working the crease for the shutout while Tom Andrews handled six shots for the Wildcats.

The Shamrocks host Canton on Monday starting at 4:30 p.m.

Canton 3, FA 0: In Canton, sophomore Josh Huiatt broke through for an unassisted goal midway through the first half and the Bears made it stand as the game-winner in raising their Central Division record to 3-0. Francesco Palumbo netted goals in the 10th and 23rd minutes of the second half to help seal the win, the first assisted by Matt Mende, while Scott Wight made five saves working the crease for the shutout.

Austin Lamay stopped 12 shots for the Huskies (4-3, 3-2).
