Harry J. Benedict, age 82, of 360 State Route 37, Akwesasne, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at home.

Harry was born September 11, 1931 in Akwesasne, the son of the late Alexander Benedict and the late Mary Point Benedict.

He was a 1950 graduate from Massena High School. He also was a graduate from A.T.I Canton, NY and attended Clarkson University, Potsdam,NY.

He served in the United States Army and was stationed at White Sands Proving Grounds during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the St. Lawrence Seaway Project as well as for the Niagara Power Project. He was also a Site Engineer at the Plattsburgh Missile Sites. He was a General Contractor for 15 years in the Syracuse NY area. Later he was a St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Sub-Chief for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.

Harry was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He married Doris Burnham on October 4, 1959. She survives him. He is also survived by six children and their spouses, Cynthia Benedict, Bombay, NY, Gary and Kathy Benedict, Camden, NY, Karen and Paul Sigona Liverpool, NY, John Benedict and Ginny, West Monroe, NY, Linda Benedict, Cornwall Island, Ont., and Catherine Benedict and Charles Thompson, Akwesasne, NY. Also by 20 grandchildren and by 7 great grandchildren. By one sister Marjorie and John Belanger, Massena, NY and by one brother David E. and Joyce Benedict, Herkimer, NY.

as well as by nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one brother Michael R. Benedict in 2008.

Harry will be resting at his daughter Cynthia Benedict’s house at 177 Scanlon Rd. Bombay, NY from Wednesday, September 18, 2013 11am until the time of the funeral on September 19, 2013 at 1:00pm with graveside services at the Mohawk Nation Cemetery, Solomon Road, Akwesasne, NY with Junior Cook officiating.
