Sheriff’s deputies warn computer scam spreading around St. Lawrence County

CANTON - St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies would like the public to be aware of a recent scam that seems to be spreading throughout the St. Lawrence County and nearby communities.

If you receive a phone call from an individual stating they are with Microsoft Global Company informing you that they have discovered viruses on your PC, deputies say you should disregard the phone call.

Deputies have been informed when a victim answers, a person identifying themselves as a representative of Microsoft Global starts giving them a serial number that they match to the victim’s PC.

The caller then asks the computer user to press certain keys on their computer, which allows the caller to take control of the owner’s PC and causes the PC to freeze. Once that is done, the caller demands payment to get the computer running again.

Please be aware that you should never provide credit card information, bank account information or personal information (i.e. social security number) over the phone without being absolutely certain of the identity of the person requesting the information and the legitimacy of the company they claim to represent, deputies stressed.

If you receive any calls similar to this, deputies ask you gain as much information as you can from the caller and contact a local law enforcement agency.
