The Jefferson-Can Scholars Program may be changing its name, but the scholarship will be provided for years to come.
Northern New York Community Foundation and Stephen H. Can, class of 1980, have pledged to contribute $50,000 annually to the Jefferson-Can Community Scholars Program.
The scholarship was created by Mr. Can and the Jefferson Community College Foundation to provide students in the top 15 percent of their high school class a full scholarship for their first year at JCC.
When the Jefferson Foundation first established the Scholars program in 2007, it was understood that we would need community support to sustain it over time, JCC President Carole M. McCoy said in a news release. The Northern New York Community Foundation, Stephen Can and the College all share a common mission to support our community through education.
According to the release, Mr. Can and the community foundation will contribute $50,000 annually while the JCC Foundation pitches in 20 percent for three years.
Mr. Can, a Blackstone Group senior managing director, recently was presented the Professional Achievement award and the Jefferson Citation for his professional work and contributions to the college.
The community foundation will manage and administer the scholarship. High school seniors will be able to find the applications in October in their high school guidance office, at JCCs financial services department and at the Northern New York Community Foundation office at 120 Washington St.
According to the release, there are 54 Jefferson-Can Scholars enrolled at JCC. Since the scholarship was developed, 290 students have received the scholarship.
The Community Foundation has a deep interest in and long history of supporting educational initiatives in the region, Rande S. Richardson, executive director of the foundation, said in the news release. Adding this scholarship to our offerings provides us with a unique opportunity to concentrate that investment locally, benefiting not only the students, but also the College, its faculty and staff, as well as area employers.
