Massena boys drop non-league decision; Canton surges past Salmon River


Massena Central dropped a non-league decision at home to Northwood Prep while Canton pulled away to a convincing NAC Central Division decision over Salmon River in varsity boys soccer action Monday afternoon.

Northwood 1, Massena 0: At Mike Nicholas Field, Cameron Marsh handled three shots in the first half and Brendan Broderick logged another four saves in the second sharing crease duties for the host Raiders.

Irie converted on a pass from Grieveson for the lone goal of the game midway through the second half and Bishop recorded six saves backstopping the win.

Massena (3-4, 2-2) heads to Potsdam Central this afternoon for a non-league encounter between Central Division rivals starting at 4:30 p.m. The Raiders downed the Sandstoners 3-0 in their first meeting of the season last week at Nicholas Field.

Canton 6, Salmon River 0: In Fort Covington, the visiting Bears set the stage for a Thursday home showdown against OFA, for the NAC Central Division lead.

Josh Huiatt scored a goal in each half for the Bears who lifted their division record to 4-0. Huiatt scored off assists by Tanner Sanderson in the first half and Matt Mende on the first goal of the second half.

Jake Facey and Steven Folk scored unassisted goals in the first half and the Golden Bars rounded out the scoring in the second with an unassisted goal by Cody Moore and a Dan Olin marker off Mende’s second assist of the contest.

Scott Wight stopped nine shots in the shutout anbd Zach Smith handled six shots for Salmon River.

OFA 8, Gouverneur 0: At Kennedy School Field, the host Blue Devils raced out to a 5-0 halftime lead in raising their unbeaten records to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the division.

Peyton Lalone sparked a decisive scoring burst when he opened the scoring in the 13th minute assisted by Conor Hannan and the Blue Devils went on to strike for three more goals over the next seven minutes. Lalone finished with a goal and two assists. Hannan tallied a goal and assist along with Matt Piercey. Dillon Binion connected for a pair of goals. David Prudhomme, Hayden Woods and Zach Ashley netted the other goals while Jacob Sias posted six saves backstopping the shutout.

Tom Andrews fielded 13 shots for the Wildcats (1-7-1, 0-6-0).


In NAC West Division boys soccer games on Monday, Morristown blanked Edwards-Knox 2-0, Lisbon stopped Hammond 3-0 and Harrisville handled Heuvelton 4-0. The lone West Division girls soccer matchup saw Heuvelton overpower Harrisville 8-0.
