WEST CARTHAGE — Times are changing for Climax Paperboard Inc., 30 Champion St., with a new name and what the CEO is billing as a multimillion-dollar expansion.

The expansion will allow for the purchase of equipment to produce more and better quality paperboard, according to company President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick J. Purdy. The rebuilding of the paper machine is expected to be completed next summer, increasing the company’s capacity by 23 percent.

Although the expansion won’t create any new jobs, Mr. Purdy said the investment will create job security for the company’s 80 employees.

“This project will enhance quality by making significant process improvements in paperboard formation and sheeting capabilities,” states a letter to the company’s business partners. “The revitalization of our manufacturing capabilities will allow us to continue to meet the evolving needs of the unique markets we serve.”

The specialty paperboard mill will remain under common ownership with the folding carton operation, Climax Manufacturing Co. in Lowville, but both companies now will operate more independently, according to Mr. Purdy.

The new name, Carthage Specialty Paperboard, reflects “our ties to the community, our mission and history as one of the only remaining ‘specialty’ recycled paperboard mills in North America,” the company’s letter states.

The company manufactures graphic arts board used for photo mats, pharmaceutical closures, white gift boxes, a variety of chipboard products used in packaging, specialty packaging and colored paper — all from recycled fibers. The products are distributed worldwide.

Until five years ago the company was owned and operated by the Hirschey family. Now it is owned by a private equity group that includes DeltaPoint Capital Management LLC of Rochester as the major owner, another equity group and a group of private individuals.
