William B. Carkner


MADRID: William B. Carkner, 66 of County Route 31 passed away on September 22, 2013 at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice.

William was born on October 21, 1946 in Potsdam the son of Henry and Erma (Porteous) Carkner. He graduated from Madrid High School and then went on to graduate from Canton ATC in Dairy Management. He was employed at NY Dairy Herd and Improvement and later worked on the family farm. He also owned and operated a local saw mill B & J Custom Lumber. He drove bus for Madrid-Waddington and a custodian retiring in 2011. On August 27, 1966 he married Dorothy Collo at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. O’Brien presiding.

William was a member of the Republican Committee, and a member of the Madrid Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a former Councilman and Town Supervisor of Madrid for 22 years. William is survived by his wife Dorothy, his mother Erma Carkner of Madrid, a son Jeffrey and wife Sharon of Syracuse, a daughter Lori Beth and Mark Murphy of Madrid, eight grandchildren, two brothers, and two sisters, James and Joanne Carkner of Lake Placid, Philip and Virginia Carkner of TX, Melinda and William Fisher of Madrid, and Cheryl and Bruce Lester of Rensselaer Falls, several nieces and nephews. Friends and family may call on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Phillips Memorial Home, 20 Church St. Madrid. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 am at the United Church of Madrid with Rev. Helen Beck presiding.

Burial will be held on Friday Sept. 27, 2013 at 3:00 pm in Madrid Cemetery.
