DANGEROUS DOG - MASSENA - Village police charged William P. Rochefort, 19, of 107 Stoughton Ave., Massena, with harboring a dangerous dog and having an unlicensed dog and having a dog without an up to date rabies vaccine.

The charges stemmed from an incident at 2:50 p.m. Aug. 29 when Rochefort’s dog allegedly attacked the next door neighbor.

Dwayne Gardner, in the statement he provided police, said he was on his property at 109 Stoughton Ave. looking at his bus parked in his driveway.

“I heard a growl and looked down to see my neighbor’s chocolate and white pitbull standing there. I put my arm up to which the dog bit my left forearm. I punched the dog, and he let go. I then kicked at the dog to which it then bit my left leg. I then continued to kick and swing at the dog,” Mr. Gardner noted.

He said his wife yelled at the dog, and she went into the residence after the took off toward her. He told police the dog also followed him as he ran to get inside his residence. He said his neighbor, Melanie McDonald, then yelled for the dog and it eventually went back home.

Rochefort pleaded not guilty during an appearance Tuesday before Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson. He was then returned to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, where he is being held on another count.
