MASSENA: Shirley M. Brown, 84 passed into the hands of the Lord Saturday (September 21,2013) at the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena. There will be no public calling hours. Shirley was born June 21, 1929 to Hebert and Mary(Bean) McDonald in Potsdam, NY. After graduating from Potsdam High School in1947 she began her career with the New York Telephone Co. in Potsdam.
On January 10, 1953 she married Robert Brown in Potsdam where they resided until 1961 at which time the family relocated to Tupper Lake. Shirley continued with New York Telephone in Saranac Lake while raising her family.
She worked part time for Sunmount in Tupper Lake at the switchboard and also helped her husband at the National Army Store which he managed in Tupper Lake. In 2010 Shirley and Bob relocated to Massena. Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who is survived by her husband Bob of 60 years, two sons Tom and wife Kathleen of Heuvelton. Don of Massena, a daughter Linda and husband Mark Mittiga of Massena, also surviving are nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, a sister Anna Wilcox of Florida and a brother Norman McDonald of Rochester as well as several nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her daughter Mary Casey in 2007, her parents, a brother Roy McDonald, sisters Regina Young, Alberta Phillips, Marion McDonald and a niece Sandra LaFleur. Shirley enjoyed spending time her family as well bowling, golfing, traveling, reading and knitting. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
