Donnie Smith continued to make a lot of noise as a first year senior in the NAC Cross Country ranks while sophomore Sarah Mitchell continued her quiet emergence as OFA hosted Malone and Brushton-Moira in its home opener on Tuesday on their 3-mile course at the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority and St. Lawrence State Psychiatric Center grounds.
Mitchell (22:42) established an early lead and maintained it over B-Ms Veronica Stauffer (23:22) and a fivesome of Huskies, led by Madeleine Champagne (23:47), running side-by-side.
We are so proud of Sara for winning her first varsity cross country race. She didnt run her best time but she was close and she ran a very nice race, said OFA Coach Chris McRoberts after the Lady Devils dropped a 20-35 decision to Malone and were edged 25-30 by B-M.
Smith, followed up a 21st place finish among 160 runners on the state meet course at the Queensbury Invitational on Saturday, by prevailing over Malones Dylan LaVoie by a two-second margin 17:30-17:30.
The duo pulled away from the field in the second half of the race and Smith relied on his sprinting experience from track-field to burst ahead in the final 200 yards.
Donnie Smith is really having a great season. He is very fast and has a very strong kick, said Coach McRoberts after the OFA Boys gained a 16-39 win over B-M and dropped a 20-35 decision to an extremely deep Malone squad which filled the second through seventh place positions. Overall we had a very good day with some personal bests and a lot of people approaching their best times.
Ellen Miller took eighth place as OFAs second finisher in the Varsity Girls Race and Shelby Mack placed 17th. Rounding a five-runner entry were: Shawna Rickett (29), Markie Willard (30) and Zoey Bishop (31).
