Pierrepont Town Board passes local law regarding tax levy hike

PIERREPONT - The Pierrepont Town Board joined an ever-growing list of St. Lawrence County municipalities to pass a local law giving them the authority to set a property tax levy hike that could be higher than the state 2 percent property tax cap.

Town Supervisor Thomas E. Latimer explained to residents in attendance that this is becoming a norm for towns in the area and the action does not necessarily mean a raise in taxes.

“Most of the municipalities are doing this. It doesn’t really mean we’re going to raise your taxes over 2 percent, just if we have to, we have to do this because if for some reason the taxes go above 2 and a half or 3 percent and we don’t do this local law, then we are fined by the state. We’re just covering ourselves,” he said.

Town Atttorney Eric J. Gustafson reiterated the town supervisor’s position. “There’s just so many unknowns when you’re going through the budget process,” he said.

The law will be in effect once it is filed with the Department of State.

In other action, the board reappointed Dale Vaughn to the Board of Assessment Review for a five-year term. Mr. Vaughn’s new term will be effective Oct. 1 and run through Sept. 30, 2018.

According to town board member Dahl McCormick, Mr. Vaughn has been working in some capacity with the board for approximately 50 years.

In addition to being a member of the Board of Assessment Review, Mr. Vaughn also serves as chairman of the Zoning Board, according to the town of Pierrepont’s web site.
