CANTON Two men died this week of injuries they suffered when their car collided with another vehicle Sept. 12 in the town of Canton.
Cody J. Tennant, 21, of Ogdensburg, died Tuesday in Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt. Corey P. Deshane, 33, of 614 Sissonville Road, Potsdam, died Thursday evening in the same hospital.
The collision happened when Mr. Deshane lost control of the car he was driving on County Route 29 and it slid into the oncoming lane where it was struck by a car driven by Cheryl L. Crayford, 26, Norwood, state police said.
Ms. Crayford told police that she was merging onto the road from County Route 27 when she came upon the other car and couldnt avoid hitting it.
Mr. Deshane had to be freed from his vehicle by a hydraulic metal-cutting tool used by the Canton Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He and Mr. Tennant, his passenger, were taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, before being transferred to Fletcher Allen, where they spent the past two weeks in critical condition.
Ms. Crayford was treated for injuries at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
No charges were brought in the accident.
Canton Volunteer 1st Assistant Fire Chief Erik D. Johnson, who responded to the crash the evening of Sept. 12, said severe accidents are a rarity for that stretch of road.
We dont spend a lot of time on Waterman Hill at all, not even in the wintertime, Mr. Johnson said Thursday night. So this is absolutely rare that we have an accident of this magnitude on this intersection, on that stretch of road.
Mr. Johnson has been with the fire department for 21 years and he said in that time he can only recount three times where calls have been made for accidents in that location.
I dont think weather impaired the accident at all, Mr. Johnson added. It was a light rain. I would have expected more of a problem if it was a heavy rain and weather wasnt conducive to freezing that night.
State police were investigating; no further information was available Thursday night.
Mr. Deshanes brother, Christopher L. Deshane, 36, of 645 Sissonville Road, Potsdam, was critically injured himself in an accident earlier the same day when as a pedestrian on Route 56 in Potsdam he was struck by a car. He has since been released from Fletcher Allen.
