Northern Symphonic Winds holding concert to benefit CPH’s Urgent Care Center

POTSDAM - Music professor and teachers from around the region will play together tonight to help raise money for Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Urgent Care Center.

The teachers are joined by selected students from the Crane School of Music and will be kicking off Northern Symphonic Winds’ 15th season of playing music with a purpose.

Their first show of the season is titled “American Scenes” and features music from seven American composers, including William Schuman’s “Chester,” William Billings’ adaptation of “America” by Charles Ives, Frank Ticheli’s “Shenandoah,” Donald Grantham’s “Southern Harmony,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide Overture,” and Aaron Copeland’s Music From the Red Pony.

Jill Rubio plays flute in the band and is a member of its board of directors.

“It’s an exciting program,” she said, adding she had a hard time picking a favorite piece.

“Particularly I love Southern Harmony,” she said. “The woodwind parts were very fun. They’re challenging and the brass parts are great.”

Another of the pieces, she described as hilarious. “I think the Copeland is hilarious,” she said. “It really has a comical side to it. Yo have to play it right or it sounds really wrong.”

But with a band made of up the region’s best musicians and music professionals playing songs right aren’t a problem for the Northern Symphonic Winds.

“It’s really a lot of fun to play, especially when you have a great band like we do,” she said.

Tonight’s performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Hosmer Hall on the campus of SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music.

Tickets are $10 each or $5 for senior citizens and students. Advance sale tickets are available at Northern Music & Video. They will also be for sale at the door.
