PAMELIA - Three St. Lawrence County residents are dead after a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on Route 342 between its intersection with Route 37 and Interstate 81 in the town of Pamelia.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the crash took place at 2:22 p.m., when a black 1995 Honda sedan traveling west on the road crossed the double center line to overtake an uninvolved vehicle and lost control, hitting a blue 2003 Ford Ranger truck that was going east. At the scene Saturday afternoon, Sheriff John P. Burns said the two vehicles collided head-on, or close to it.

The department, in a press release, said the driver of the Honda, Lucas P. McCormick, 28, of Cranberry Lake;front seat passenger Kimberly A. Lawson, 36, of Canton; and back seat passenger Erik J. Swinyer, 25, of Newton Falls died at the scene.

A toddler in the back seat was flown to SUNY Upstate Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, deputies said. Witnesses said the toddler was buckled in a car seat.

Police said the pickup truck was being operated by Lois Toland, 64, of Hammond. Deputies said she was listed in stable condition.

The road from the intersection between the two roadways and Interstate 81 was closed for hours as law enforcement investigated the scene.

Assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department at the scene were state police, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office, the North Pole, Pamelia and Calcium fire departments, along with Evans Mills and Guilfoyle Ambulance.
