Mary Catherman took first place at Allentown Arts Festival, Buffalo, and at the Springtime in Canandaigua Show.

Lou Currin took Best in Show at the Along the River’s Edge Show, Thousand Islands Arts Center, Clayton.

Robert Hedden received an Artistic Merit Award with the Central New York Watercolor Society in the Annual Members Juried Show, Cooperstown; first place in oil at the Arts Association of Northern New York Annual Show, Sackets Harbor; and Honorable Mention at Arts Association on Northern of New York’s Plein Air Festival.

Ruth Uhlig took first place for pastel at the annual Jekyll Arts Festival, Jekyll Island, Ga., and third place in pastel with the Arts Association of Northern New York.

Honored: Kavanagh Oliver, 12, Sackets Harbor, was honored with an American Legion Auxiliary National Award for helping his grandmother, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast/bone cancer. He received the award from Mindy Whalen, past Jefferson County American Legion Auxiliary president, on Sept. 28.

Honored: The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce has announced September winners of its Gateways and Corridors Committee’s Revitalization Awards. Kathleen and Donald Wylie, 911 State St., and Little Italy Pizzeria, 900 State St., will display the chamber’s blue ribbon award signs for their wins.

Juried Art Exhibit: Several local area artists are among those selected to exhibit their work at the Frederic Remington Art Museum’s 2013 International Juried Art Exhibit. The works were put on display Sept. 21 and will be shown through Jan. 11 at the museum’s Richard E. Winter Gallery.

Winner: Shayna Cook, 6-year-old daughter of Jeremy and Erin Cook, Sackets Harbor, won first place in the 2013 National American Miss New York competition, held Aug. 17. Miss Cook will represent New York in the National Miss competition, to be held in Anaheim, Calif., over Thanksgiving break. Miss Cook enjoys Sunday School, Watertown Lyric Theater productions, soccer, basketball, singing and dancing. She is sponsored by Saturdays, Sundaes & More, Sackets Harbor, Baby Ella’s Boutique and friends and family.

Miss Woodcock, daughter of Linda Woodcock, Colton, and the late Robert Woodcock, received a $1,230 Robert Rie Scholarship. She is majoring in English and interdisciplinary studies — women’s and gender studies and is a graduate of Hugh C. Williams Senior High School, Canton.
