Clarkson, SUNY Potsdam volleyball players earn weekly league honors

POTSDAM - The Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam women’s volleyball teams produced the players of the week of their respective conferences.

A dominating effort from Xiao Liang (Tianjin, China) over the last week allowed Clarkson to jump out to a 4-0 record in conference play and netted the senior the Liberty League Performer of the Week honor on Monday.

The Golden Knights, 12-4 overall, started off the conference schedule with sweeps of St. Lawrence, Bard, Vassar and RIT, thanks in large part to an impressive effort in the middle from Liang. The senior recorded 36 kills in 12 sets (3.00 kps) and hit .456 overall. She also added in four aces, five blocks, and 20 digs.

Overall, Liang is hitting .357 on the season, which ranks second in the Liberty League, and she averages 1.75 kills per set as well as 1.13 digs per set. and 20 total blocks. She has made only three reception errors the entire year, one of the lowest figures in the conference.

The State University of New York Athletic Conference has named SUNY Potsdam senior Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) its volleyball Player of the week for the week ending Sept. 29.

The two-time all-conference setter/right side had another monster weekend for the Bears, leading Potsdam to a 3-0 SUNYAC Pool Play weekend and a spot atop the conference standings. Blujus had 11 kills, 20 assists and 18 digs in Potsdam’s five-set victory over Cortland on Saturday. It was the Bears first win over the Red Dragons since 2008 and just the third victory in the series since 1984. Blujus finished out the weekend with 27 kills,

58 assists and 47 digs.

This season, the senior leads the team in assists (308), digs (250) and services aces (49) and is second in kills (146) and blocks (17). Blujus is already SUNY Potsdam’s all-time assists and service ace leader.

Potsdam is back in action this evening with a road rematch against SUNY Canton.
