POTSDAM - High schools across the Adirondack-North Country are invited to send representatives to the second Food Day Youth Summit sponsored by GardenShare on Oct. 16, on the campus of SUNY Potsdam.

GardenShare will host students from grades 9 through 12 for a day of dynamic presentations, interactive workshops, discussions, and action planning around important food issues of our day.

Topics include enjoying healthy food and creating healthy diets, ending hunger and making food affordable, understanding our food system, curbing junk-food marketing to students and more.

Keynote speaker Roger Doiron is a national gardening activist who is credited with inspiring Michelle Obama’s White House garden.

Participating schools will each send a team of three to seven students plus one to threee adults who have a passion to explore the crucial food issues of our day. Each team will return home having devised a food action plan to implement at their school or in their community.

Every high school in the Adirondack-North Country region is invited to participate, and there is no fee to attend. So far schools from the Tri-Lakes region, St. Lawrence Valley, Jefferson and Lewis cCounties have registered. Space is limited and preregistration is required. The registration deadline is Oct. 9.

GardenShare is offering scholarships to assist schools with the cost of transportation and substitute teachers for this event.
