AMVETS golf toournament raises funds for Base Camp Serenity

To The Editor:

On Sept. 14, 2013, AMVETS Post 4, Sons of AMVETS 4, and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 4 hosted the first planned to be annual Base Camp Serenity Open golf tournament at Twin Brooks Golf Course in Waddington.

Every bit of the proceeds raised from the tournament go to support Base Camp Serenity and Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventures, an incredible organization that provides recreational and therapeutic opportunities for disabled veterans of the Iraqi and Afghan wars.

Veterans and their families and friends are welcomed to a beautiful home on Route 131 in Louisville, donated to Wounded Warrior Outdoor Adventures by John and Resa Wing, former Louisville residents. While there, they have the opportunity to take advantage of Northern New York’s great outdoor activities, including camping, boating, fishing and hunting.

Our first tournament was a huge success, due mostly to the hard work of many AMVETS members and generous donations from community members, organizations and businesses. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who donated money, great prizes and their time and efforts to this worthy cause.

We would like to thank the following businesses and organizations for sponsoring holes on the golf course: Laneuville’s Groceries & Bottle Center, United Steel Workers Local #420, SeaComm Federal Credit Union, AMVETS Post 265, Parishville, AMVETS “Robert J. Fregoe” Post 282, Curran Renewable Energy, Seaway Timber Harvesting, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 1702, Massena Savings & Loan, Blevin’s Seaway Motors, Inc., AMVETS Post 4, Sons of AMVETS 4, AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 4, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2032 Executive Board Officers, American Legion Post 1479, and Bogosian Carpet Co. & BC Cleaning.

The following community members, businesses and organizations made donations in support of our fund raising efforts and we are extremely grateful: An Italian Affair, On a Roll Deli, Dar’s at the Quality Inn, Price Chopper, Trombino’s Restaurant, Vino Vidi Vici, MMH Foundation, Gary and Gladys Cross, Twin Rivers Fedral Credit Union, North Country Savings Bank, Edge of Town Auto Sales, Ed Frank, Sons of the AMVETS #4, Raymondville Golf Club, Open Net Lounge, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, W.L. Smith Hardware, Kinney Drugs, Phil & Jackie’s, Peets Jewelers, Perry’s Big M, Community Bank NA, Downtown Florist, The Floral Gallery, Wendy’s, St. Lawrence Centre Arena, Haun Welding, Massena Memorial Hospital, Stewart’s Shops, Coca-Cola Bottling of Malone, and John and Resa Wing.

We would like to share our thanks with the members of AMVETS Post 4, Sons of the AMVETS 4 and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 4 who gave their time and efforts.

Many thanks to the Post and Ladies Auxiliary members who faced the rain to man the scoring table and our “Closest to the Pin” hole during the tournament and worked in the kitchen preparing the delicious buffet dinner. Thanks to Kurt Breitbeck and Jeff Laba for preparing the pork loins and to Ken Beckstead for providing entertainment at the banquet following the tournament. Thanks, too, to those who sold 50/50 tickets and donated salads and desserts.

Without all of you, we would not have had the successful day we did.

Finally, we need to extend special thanks to Twin Brooks Golf Course and A. Cappione, Inc., for their help and support from the very minute we approached them with our ideas. Shannon and Wendy at Twin Brooks took great care of us and provided a wonderful lunch to our golfers. Curt and the folks at A. Cappione, Inc. were incredibly helpful and generous with advertising the tournament and providing some great prizes.

Words can’t fully express how much we appreciate the help we have received from our community to support Base Camp Serenity and Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventures. Thank you for helping us to honor our veterans.

Base Camp Serenity Open Golf Tournament Committee; Ben Gladding, Nancy Curran, James Gardner, AMVETS Post 4 Commander
