Morristown village garage proposal on hold until next year

MORRISTOWN - Plans for a new village garage are on hold for the remainder of the year in order to secure a variance for the project.

Village Superintendent of Public Works Kevin J. Crosby said the new garage wouldn’t meet the village’s set-back requirements and so they are in the process of getting an exception to the law approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

“We’re just going through the normal process,” Mr. Crosby said. “The first part of the process is applying for the permit and getting rejected.”

Mr. Crosby said the proposed garage is technically too large for the plot of land, on the corner of Gouverneur Street and Northumberland Street, and not far enough away from the road.

The current village garage is too small to house all of the village’s equipment forcing some things, like the village plow truck, to sit outside year-round.

Mr. Crosby said he never expected the garage to move forward this summer, though it was talked about early in the year as a low priority project that would be helpful to have finished.

Next year is a different story.

Mr. Crosby said the project will “definitely” go forward next summer. In June Mr. Crosby said the project would likely cost less than $150,000.

The new garage will also house a permanent dumping station for campers to utilize. Currently a temporary station, the only one between Jacques Cartier Park and Ogdensburg, has been set up by the village docks.
