To The Editor:
On Sept. 14, St. Lawrence NYSARC held the 6th Annual Autism Awareness Walk at the park in downtown Canton. Several hundred people were in attendance and raised a profit of $25,100 to support people on the autism spectrum. The Walk host was WWNY-TV news anchor, Jeff Cole. Presenting sponsorship was provided by Rose and Kiernan Inc. Media sponsorship came from 95.3 The Wolf. Event sponsors included Sullivans Office Supply/Seasons Gift Shop, Olympia Sports, Potsdam Elks Lodge 2074, Kinney Foundation, Pepsi-Cola of Ogdensburg, nice n easy, St. Lawrence Supply, Team Blevins, Stewarts Shops, Seaway Valley Jumpers, and Mikes Michigans.
The Walk would not have been possible without support from the Rev. Michael Catanzaro, Mayor David Curry, the Canton Village Board, Dave Regan, Officer Kevin Mousaw, and Chief Lori McDougal. We also thank the volunteers from SUNY Cantons Alpha Phi Omega, SUNY Cantons Womens Hockey team, SUNY Canton Mens Hockey team, St. Lawrence Universitys Community Based Learning program, and SUNY Cantons Gamma Sigma Zeta Fraternity for their assistance.
This years awareness flag contest brought in 16 wonderful entries. We will plan to do this contest again, so teams can start preparing now. The Best Overall flag was created by Team Ginger Puff and Fairy Tail. The Most Creative flag was made by Willmart Team, and Team Adam made the Most Original Flag. Visit our Facebook page to see all the flag contest entries. Special thanks to the community members and businesses that supported our Walk with prize donations.
Several area teams brought in significant donations to help us reach our highest profits to date. Top fund raising groups included: Kylas Voice, Koley Cooper, Team Shaner, Coopers Team, Dizzles Delight, SUNY Cantons Alpha Phi Omega, Team Adam, Team Talon, and Team Seth.
