Stephen A. Spilman


MORRISTOWN—The Funeral Mass for Stephen Arthur “Steve” Spilman, 64, 100 Main Street, will be Friday at 3:00 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 506 Gouverneur Street, with Rev. Jay Seymour, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery. There will be a reception at Turner Inn, SH 58, following the Committal Service.

Mr. Spilman died Sunday evening, September 29, 2013 at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg where he was taken by Morristown Fire Department Ambulance after being stricken at his home.

Surviving Mr. Spilman are his wife Gail, two daughters; Tracy VanArnam and her husband David, Tonya Spilman and her fiancÚ` Rafael Olazagasti, three grandchildren; Kirsty, Karter VanArnam and Lily Olazagasti, all of Morristown; one sister, Ann Marie Frost, Cazenovia; two brothers, and three sisters-in-law, Edward “Teddy” and his wife Marijke Spilman, Groveland, California, John and his wife Barbara Spilman, Vero Beach, Florida and Mary Catherine Spilman, Morristown and several nieces and nephews.

Predeceasing Mr. Spilman is one brother James, who died in May 2012.

Born March 4, 1949 in Ogdensburg, he was the youngest child of Edward August and Ethyl Reilly Spilman and graduated from Morristown Central School in 1967.

Steve attended Syracuse University in the Forestry Curriculum and then attended Canton ATC, now SUNY Canton.

On October 11, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Gail Eggleston at St. John the Evangelist Church in Morristown. The couple wintered in Florida for the past few years.

Since 1970, Steve spent his lifetime as a working owner and operator of Morristown Fuel and Supply, Inc. a business he continued to co-own and operate with his daughter, Tracy VanArnam.

In 1980 the Village of Morristown appointed Mr. Spilman to serve on the Planning Board, a position he continued to serve until his death.

Steve was member of the Morristown Fire Department since 1970 and received his 40 years of Service Award in January 2013.He served as Bingo Captain for over 40 years as well as the 4th of July Parade Chairman for over 35 years. Steve was named Morristown Firefighter of the year in 1982 and 1997 and also was the recipient of the Morristown Fire Department Chiefs Award in 1998.

Steve was a participant of the 4 man Wednesday Night League at Langbrook Meadows for nine years.

An Antique car buff, Steve was often seen after work, driving his orange colored Henry J around Morristown when he wasn’t out on the St. Lawrence River in their blue and white Formula boat. He was a member of the Seaway Cruisers Car Club.
