RICHVILLE — Two Richville men accused of breaking into a neighbor’s residence to plug in an extension cord were arrested by state police Wednesday on burglary charges.

Justin L. Hardy, 22, of 280 County Route 20, and Corey L. Bush, 29, of 1625 Boland Road, both were charged with burglary and illegal entry with criminal intent, a class C felony.

Police said Mr. Hardy had permission from his neighbor, David Carpenter, to run an extension cord between their two apartments. Police reported that before leaving for work, Mr. Carpenter unplugged the cord from an outlet in his apartment and locked his door.

On returning home, Mr. Carpenter found the extension cord had been plugged back in, $15 in coins was missing, and fuel had been siphoned from his truck and snowmobile.

A witness reported seeing Mr. Hardy and Mr. Bush enter Mr. Carpenter’s apartment while he was at work, police said.

Additionally, Mr. Bush was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and Mr. Hardy was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Police said they arrested Mr. Bush at his residence, where they saw a bag of marijuana on a table and, after hearing a noise in the back, found Mr. Hardy hiding in another room.

Both men were arraigned in Fowler Town Court and taken to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Oct. 8 in DeKalb Town Court.
