CANTON – St. Lawrence University unofficially opened its mens hockey season with a 4-2 victory over Carleton University in an exhibition game on Saturday night at Appleton Arena.
The Saints top line of Greg Carey, Matt Carey and Jeremy Wick combined for 10 points, including three goals and seven assists.
After Wick drew St. Lawrence even with a goal 6:17 into the second period, freshman defenseman Gavin Bayreuther scored the go-ahead goal while on the power play, with Matt Carey assisting at 15:02.
Greg Carey scored the game-winning goal at 6:22 of the third period and Matt Carey added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Matt Carey, a freshman, finished with a goal and three assists, while Wick and Greg Carey, both seniors, each contributed a goal and two assists.
Senior goaltender Matt Weninger stopped 18 of 20 shots faced to earn the win.
Matt Dopud made 24 saves for Carleton and teammates Jeff Hayes and Mitch Porowski each scored a goal.
St. Lawrence begins its regular season when it hosts Maine at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
