Clarkson women take hockey series opener against SLU


POTSDAM — Clarkson University defenseman Erin Ambrose produced her second straight hat trick, leading the Golden Knights to a 5-2 victory over St. Lawrence University in a nonconference women’s hockey game Friday at Cheel Arena.

Ambrose, a sophomore, has already matched her season total of six goals last year in just two games for the third-ranked Golden Knights (2-0 overall).

Brittany Styner and Jamie Lee Rattray also scored for Clarkson.

Dayle Wilkinson and Brooke Webster scored for the Saints (1-2).


SLU 3, Rensselaer 0: Aaron Costello needed just one save to lead the Saints past the Engineers (5-4, 1-1) in a Liberty League game in Canton.

Praveen Balakumaran and Andrew Bednarsky scored goals in the first half for SLU (6-1-1, 2-0), and Jamal Samaroo scored in the second half for the Saints.

Union 1, Clarkson 0: Ryan Carter made three saves as Union shut out Clarkson (2-7, 0-2) in a Liberty League game in Potsdam.

Dean Constant scored the only goal for the Dutchmen (9-0-1, 2-0) in the 48th minute, with Nick Vozzella assisting.

Cortland 1, Potsdam 0: A six-save effort from Tim Beauvais led SUNY Cortland past SUNY Potsdam (6-5, 0-2) in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

Dillon Johnson scored for the Red Dragons (5-5, 2-1) off a pass from Darren McCormack with 20 seconds left in the first half.


Cortland 3, Potsdam 0: Rachel Axt stopped the only shot on goal she faced as the Red Dragons defeated the Bears (3-6-1, 0-2) in a SUNYAC game in Cortland.

Emma Whittle scored in the first half for SUNY Cortland (3-3-4, 1-0-2), and Samantha Gardner and Kelly Knight supplied second-half goals.

Rensselaer 3, SLU 1: Brooke Van Bausch and Sara Rothschild scored goals in the first 21 minutes to lead the Engineers (6-2-1, 1-0) past the Saints in a Liberty League game in Troy.

Samantha Rock scored late in the first half for the Saints (6-2-2, 0-2). Giana Abballe scored the final goal in the 54th minute for RPI.

Union 1, Clarkson 0 (OT): Whitney Bickford scored an unassisted goal in the 92nd minute to lead Union past Clarkson (3-7, 0-2) in a Liberty League game in Schenectady.

Allison Brustowicz made two saves for Union (4-3, 2-1).


Clarkson wins two: Aishvina Arasu produced 23 kills as the Golden Knights (15-4, 6-0) swept a pair of Liberty League matches at Annandale-on-Hudson.

Clarkson opened with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-13 victory over Skidmore and then swept Vassar 25-18, 25-19, 25-14.

Lani Durio totalled 63 assists in the two matches.

SLU takes two: Rebecca Doser led St. Lawrence (13-6, 5-1) with 16 total kills as the Saints won a pair of Liberty League matches at Annandale-on-Hudson.

SLU beat Union College 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18 and then swept host Bard 25-8, 25-9, 25-11.

Jenna Street led the Saints with 33 assists against Union.

Canton Splits: Mackenzie Mynter produced a total of 57 assists as SUNY Canton (16-3) went 1-1 in the first day of the Kean Invitational in Union, N.J.

The Kangaroos opened with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 sweep of CCNY and then dropped a five-game match to Kean 25-21, 25-13, 13-25, 24-26, 15-12.

Jessica Reynolds had 13 kills against Kean and Lindsay Bryer added 11.
