MALONE - The Titus Mountain Family Ski Center was alive on Saturday with the sounds of live music and the smells of barbecued food as the center held its Oktoberfest to kick off the fall season.

The event was marked by rides up the face of Titus Mountain on the chair lift; vendors; exhibits; activities for children such as bounce houses, an inflatable slide, a rock climbing wall and a sandbox filled with corn; live music in the afternoon from Backdraft, a band based in Stockholm; and food and drinks available for purchase.

“This is an awesome event,” said Jim McGaheran of Potsdam, who said it was his family’s first time at Oktoberfest. “The kids really enjoyed it.”

Mr. McGaheran said his kids had fun in the bounce houses and took their first ride on the ski lift.

“They loved it,” he said.

Nancy and Scott Dube watched as their son, Casey, slid down the inflatable slide, followed by his friend Caleb Larode.

“We came for the fireworks,” Nancy Dube said. “It will be nice to get some of their energy out, walk around a bit and watch the fireworks.”

Backdraft played on the patio by the ski lodge during the late afternoon. Matt Jock, singer and rhythm guitarist, flanked by bassist T.J. Goodwin, lead guitarist Evan Drummatter and drummer Mike Reyome, played a varied set list of new and classic rock along with some country thrown in.

Mr. Jock said the band has been playing together for the past two-and-a-half years. He noted that it was Backdraft’s first time playing at Oktoberfest.
