MASSENA - Just as Fire Prevention Week arrives faithfully every October, so does a thank you breakfast for Massenas firefighters, courtesy of Mary Currys Life Skills class at Jefferson Elementary School.
Tuesday was no exception.
Members of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department were at the school to conduct a fire drill, give a fire safety presentation in the gymnasium and demonstrate their aerial truck outside the school. And, when those were done, they were invited to Ms. Currys room, where a breakfast meal that included a hash brown casserole, donuts, toast, coffee and juice awaited them.
This is a treat for them because theyre good to our community, Ms. Curry told her students during the firefighters visit to their classroom.
She said its one of the service projects the students have been doing for about four years.
We do several community service projects. We do a couple of community service projects each year. We look around the community and see where we can do something that would help somebody, Ms. Curry said.
Among their other service projects in recent years was making dog biscuits for the Massena Humane Societys animal shelter, making cinnamon ornaments for the nursing homes and creating reindeer candy canes during the holiday season to give to the Massena Meals on Wheels to send out with their meals to shut-in community members.
Tuesdays breakfast has become part of the Fire Prevention Week routine at Jefferson Elementary, according to Principal Duane L. Richards. They do it every year as a service project to show the firemen they appreciate what they do. Its just part of the routine, Mr. Richards said.
Parents of the students donated items to bring in, he said, and the breakfast was prepared at the school.
As the firefighters enjoyed their meal, Ms. Curry was leading her students in a presentation about not just firefighters, but other service groups in the community such as police officers.
Weve been doing a lot of learning about firefighters. We looked at the fire truck. Today we learned about police officers, she said.
After their visit to Jefferson Elementary, Massenas firefighters continued their Fire Prevention Week activities Tuesday afternoon at Trinity Catholic School. Theyll be at Holy Name of Jesus Academy today.
Theyll also be holding their annual drill at 6 p.m. today on the Main Street bridge, and the public is invited to watch as they use their aerial trucks, along with aerial trucks from Hogansburg-Akwesasne and Brasher-Winthrop.
Fire Prevention Week wraps up on Saturday when they hold their annual banquet to recognize years of service and announce their Fireman of the Year.
