LISBON - Lisbon Beach and Campground Director Michael J. O’Neil defended his request for a 52-percent raise next year, saying the amount of time he dedicates to the job warrants the increase.

At last month’s meeting the Town Council tabled any discussion of Mr. O’Neil’s salary.

The council is expected to discuss his salary at Wednesday’s meeting which will be held at the Town Hall at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. O’Neil currently makes $13,000 and asked to have that increased to roughly $20,000 per year.

The Lisbon Beach and Campground is open from May 1 to Oct. 15.

“I work seven days a week from mid-April to October 15,” Mr. O’Neil said. “In the summer time I’m here working at least 16 hours a day.”

Mr. O’Neil said his current salary equates to much less than the state minimum wage of $7.25 and is a bargain for the town.

“That’s really low compared to [the salaries at] state parks,” he said of his requested salary.

In addition to working through the summer months when the campground is open Mr. O’Neil said he is busy in the winter taking reservations.

“This is my life here now,” Mr. O’Neil said. “I haven’t missed a day’s work from the day I took this job.

On the job Mr. O’Neil is responsible for reservations, maintenance, supervising other employees and managing the day-to-day needs at the beach and campground.
