St. Lawrence sweeps Maine on opening weekend

CANTON — St. Lawrence University made it a clean sweep of the University of Maine for the second consecutive season on Saturday night.

Sophomore Brian Ward scored the game winner with 4:54 remaining and Greg Carey followed with a pair of goals in succession as the Saints downed the Black Bears, 5-2 before a crowd of 2,310 on St. Lawrence’s homecoming weekend.

Goalie Matt Weninger made 32 saves, including stopping 18 of 19 shots faced in the third period for the Saints (2-0).

The Saints have won all four meetings with the Black Bears dating back to last season when they won two games in Orono, Maine.

After Matt Anthoine tied the game for Maine at 2-2 with his power-play goal at 12:00 of the third period, Ward responded with the go-ahead goal, with Gunnar Hughes assisting at 15:06.

Carey, who also had an assist, then scored only 48 seconds later and added an empty-net goal.

Gavin Bayreuther and Jeremy Wick scored a goal each for the Saints, with Wick providing the Saints with a 3-2 lead entering the final period with a tally with 7.7 seconds left.

Martin Ouellette finished with 32 saves for the Black Bears (0-2).

The Saints will make another early season trip to the Midwest as they play at Ferris State at 7 p.m. next Friday and Saturday.
